Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, a chief embattled Gules, overall a surveyor's dividers above a pheon Sable; a bordure counterchanged. Attached below the shield a bipartite scroll Sable doubled and inscribed "NEVER BEHIND" in Silver.

Symbolism
The Corps of Engineers is represented by the colors scarlet and white and the crenellated division of the shield, recalling the castle insignia of the Corps and the unit's original designation. The dividers refer to survey and other activities which were part of the unit's mission. The pheon alludes to the Battalion's combat role and suggests an airfoil, recalling Anti-Aircraft Artillery heritage. Red and white refer again to unit association with Anti-Aircraft Artillery and the Signal Corps respectively. Black denotes strength and stability. The bordure symbolizes unity and coordination of the tasks included in carrying out the mission.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 1088th Engineer Battalion on 27 February 1995. It was redesignated for the Special Troops Battalion, 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team with the symbolism updated on 15 January 2009.
